OXFORD, Ohio - The reigning GMAC Bowl and Mid-American Conference champion Miami University football team will defend its titles and the nation's longest winning streak this season with an 11-game schedule that includes a match up with perennial national power and Big Ten champ Michigan in Ann Arbor and an eight-game conference schedule, highlighted by two national television appearances on the ESPN family of networks versus Marshall University on Sept. 29 and the University of Toledo on Nov. 2.
The RedHawks open the 2004 season on Aug. 28 with the first game of the college football season, taking on Indiana State from the Gateway Football Conference. Due to Colorado State asking Miami to move its scheduled game from this year to 2010 and conflicts in Miami's and Indiana State's schedules, the RedHawks and Sycamores were able to receive an NCAA wavier to move their game a week ahead of the official NCAA start date.
"Despite the challenges in scheduling our 11th game, we are thrilled to have Indiana State open up Yager Stadium as we turn on permanent lights and a new scoreboard for the first time," said Director of Athletics Brad Bates. "As a program, our team will benefit greatly from hitting the field a week earlier than anyone else in the country."
Following the season opener, the RedHawks take to the road for two weeks to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule, traveling to Ann Arbor to play Michigan, who lost to last year's National Champs USC in the Rose Bowl, on Sept. 4 and the University of Cincinnati on Sept. 11 in the 109th edition of the Battle for the Victory Bell.
"I look at this schedule and I am excited to get the season started right now," said reigning MAC Coach of the Year Terry Hoeppner. "Once again we have a competitive non-conference schedule that includes a high profile team like Michigan and our longest running rival the University of Cincinnati. When we open up the year versus Indiana State on Aug. 28 everyone in Oxford will be 'charged' up as we put the nation's longest winning streak on the line and turn on permanent lights and a new scoreboard for the first time in Yager Stadium history."
The RedHawks' eight-game MAC schedule will be highlighted by two weeknight ESPN games versus perennial MAC powers, Marshall and Toledo, which both finished in the top two of their respective divisions last season. Miami's other MAC games include home tilts against Ohio, Kent State and UCF. The remaining MAC road games include trips to Buffalo on Oct. 16, Western Michigan on Nov. 13 and Akron on Nov. 20 for the season finale.
