OXFORD, Ohio - Freshman Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) hurled seven shutout innings and four RedHawks had to hits as Miami University's baseball team won its conference season opener, 7-2, against Ohio University at McKie Field. With the win, MU moves to 14-8 overall, while the Bobcats fall to 4-14 on the season.
The RedHawks got on the board with a single run in the fourth. Junior Sam Sellery (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. After sophomore Geoff Orr (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sundberg) singled through the left side, Sellery was scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Brian Canada (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) to center field.
Miami made it 2-0 in the third. Junior Courtney Campbell (Evansville, Ind./North) led off with a single, stole second and reached third on a ground out. Junior Mike Ferris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) plated Campbell with a singled down the left field line.
In the sixth inning, the Red and White broke the game open, scoring five runs to build its lead to 7-0. Orr led the inning off with a walk and was followed by back-to-back bunt singles by Canada and freshman Ryne Robinson (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic). A wild throw on Robinson's hit scored Orr and advanced Robinson and Canada to second and third. Campbell flew out to center, scoring Canada and making it 4-0.
Junior Jason Brown (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) kept the rally going with an infield single, before junior John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ferris drove in his team-leading 31st and 32nd runs of the season with a single up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball. Two batters later, junior Paul Frietch (Montgomery, Ohio/Moeller) was intentionally walked to load the bases and Orr forced Slone home with his second walk of the inning.
In seven innings of work, Weiser (5-1) yielded just three hits, while striking out six OU batters. His counterpart, Chris Bova (1-4), also went seven innings, allowing all seven of Miami's runs, five earned, and striking out five.
OU added a pair of runs in the eighth inning with a two-run home run by Phil Sabatini to avoid the shutout.
The weekend series continues with single games on Saturday and Sunday at McKie Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. both days.
