CLEVELAND - After leading Miami to a 4-2 record last week, which included four home runs, junior first baseman Mike Ferris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colrain) was tabbed the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Ferris earns the honor for the second time in three weeks and the third time in his career. Miami players have captured the player of the week award four of the five weeks, while two pitchers also have garnered pitcher of the week accolades, boosting Miami's total number of player/pitcher of the week honors to six this season.
Over six games last week, Ferris launched four home runs, scored nine runs and tallied 14 RBI. He went 8-for-23 from the plate (.348) and walked six times for a .483 on-base percentage. For the week, Ferris pounded a stellar .957 slugging percentage. He hit safely in all six games and opened the week with a 3-for-4 performance in a 19-9 win over Fairfield where he drove in six runs off two home runs and a triple. In the seventh inning against UMASS in Miami's final game of the week, Ferris drilled a three-run homer, which put the RedHawks up 6-5 with Miami eventually claiming an 8-6 win.
The RedHawks (12-8) return home to host Cincinnati at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23 before opening Mid-American Conference play this weekend, hosting Ohio in a three-game weekend series. Friday's game against the Bobcats is slated for 3 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's tilts are set for 1 p.m.
