BRADENTON, Fla. - The Miami baseball team opened up its Spring Trip in Bradenton, Fla. With a bang downing the University of Northern Iowa, 8-3, under the lights at Robert C. Wynn Field at the Manatee Community College. Sophomore centerfielder Jason Brown was the offensive star for the RedHawks, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
The RedHawks had to come-from-behind right out of the box as freshman pitcher Keith Weiser allowed a pair of walks to score in the top of the first. It didn't take Miami long to respond as it put together two runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning. The key hit came from freshman designated hitter Todd Veith as he singled in his first career at-bat and drove in both runs.
From there the RedHawk bats soared as the put up four runs in the second and one in the third to jump out to a 7-2 after three innings.
After a rough first inning, Weiser settled down over the next six innings allowing just four more hits. He finished with three runs allowed and three strikeouts in seven innings of work. Senior reliever Chad Reineke finished the game striking out four over the last two innings.
The RedHawks (7-5, 0-0 MAC) continue the Spring Trip tomorrow with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. versus Army and Yale, respectively. Both games will be played at the Manatee Community College.
