OXFORD, Ohio - After leading the RedHawks to a Mid-American Conference Championship, a GMAC Bowl title and a No. 10 ranking in the final Associated Press poll, fifth-year head coach Terry Hoeppner was named the Columbus Dispatch's Ohio College Coach of the Year, the newspaper announced today.
Hoeppner is the first Miami coach to earn the distinction. Hoeppner led the RedHawks to an 13-1 record this season, including a perfect 8-0 mark in the MAC and Miami's first MAC East Division title. The RedHawks' 13-game winning streak is the longest in the nation and the longest in school history. The high-powered Miami offense was the highest scoring offense in the nation, averaging 43.0 points per game, thanks in great part to the MAC's Offensive Player of the Year Ben Roethlisberger.
Hoeppner was a runaway choice for MAC Coach of the Year, garnering 18 of the 29 first-place votes and 61 votes overall cast by the other college head coaches in the state. Also named were Bowling Green's Gregg Brandon (33 votes), Ohio State's Jim Tressel (30 votes) and Mount Union's Larry Kehres (20 votes).
