OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami tennis team ran its Mid-American Conference record to 2-1 with its second conference win of the weekend, downing the University of Akron, 5-2, at the Riverside Racquet Club in Hamilton, Ohio.
For the second day in a row, Miami made it a complete sweep in doubles. The No. 1 team of junior Megan Zimpfer and freshman Remy Swain had the toughest match, battling back to take a 9-7 victory. In the No. 2 flight, sophomore Nancy Wiegand and senior Ilze Meyer picked up their second straight win as a duo, dominating Akron 8-1. Despite a tight hamstring that plagued sophomore Grace Cascarilla, her partner, freshman Maura Trauernicht, and her made easy work in the No. 3 pairing, winning 8-4.
In the singles, the RedHawks allowed just four points in their four wins by Wiegand, Swain, Meyer and Trauernicht. Trauernicht ran her personal winning streak to five matches, while Meyer has now won her last four contests.
The win puts Miami at 7-8 overall on the season. The RedHawks close out their five-match homestand next weekend at the Hepburn Courts with their final home matches of the year, taking on Ball State Friday and Bowling Green on Saturday. Both matches begin at 1 p.m.
