Game Notes Miami vs. Akron Saturday, October 4, 2003

Team Notes:

-Miami improved to 39-16-1 in MAC openers and has won its last eight.

-The RedHawks moved to 59-33-4 all-time at Yager Stadium and 2-0 this season.

-Miami scored 45 points, marking the fourth straight week that Miami has eclipsed the 40-point mark. This is only the second time in Miami history that a RedHawk squad has reeled off four consecutive 40-point efforts. The last time a Miami team accomplished this was 1954 under head coach Ara Parseghian.

-Miami's 83-yard scoring drive in the first quarter marked the fifth consecutive game this season that the RedHawks have scored first.

-Miami continued to capitalize on turnovers, scoring touchdowns after each of its three interceptions.

-Miami's 98-yard drive following John Busing's interception was its longest scoring march of the season. The RedHawks also tallied touchdown drives of 75, 80, and 83 yards.

Individual Notes:

-With his 17-yard catch in the first quarter, junior Michael Larkin stretched his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 29. Larkin has recorded at least one reception in each game he has played. In addition, Larkin's five receptions made him just the ninth player in Miami history to record 100 or more catches and moved him into ninth on Miami's all-time receptions list with 101 catches.

-Freshman Ryan Busing's 34-yard catch in the first quarter was the longest of his career. Busing's seven catches for 132 yards also were career highs.

-Juniors Ben Roethlisberger and Michael Larkin moved into a tie as Miami's highest scoring touchdown tandem with their 16th touchdown connection on a 10-yard pass in the second quarter.

-Junior Mike Smith recorded his first career touchdown reception on a one-yard scoring grab in the second quarter. Smith later scored on a seven-yard touchdown run, giving him eight touchdowns in his last four games.

-Junior Jared Parseghian's streak of 18 consecutive made field goals ended late in the first half when his 36-yard attempt sailed wide left. Parseghian's successful 19-yard field goal in the third quarter moved the RedHawk kicker into a tie for fifth on Miami's all-time field goal list with 22 career makes.

-Senior running back Cal Murray, Jr. had his most productive rushing game of the season, gaining 108 yards on 19 carries.

-Roethlisberger's 47 pass attempts moved him past Charlie Batch for 10th all-time in career attempts among MAC quarterbacks. The Miami quarterback also threw for over 300 yards for the fourth consecutive week, which marks the first time he has achieved this feat in his career.

-Sophomore linebacker John Busing's third-quarter interception was the third of his career.

-For the third consecutive week, sophomore linebacker Terna Nande forced a turnover, with his fourth-quarter interception of Akron quarterback Charlie Frye.

-Senior defensive linemen Will Stanley and Phil Smith each tallied a sack.

-Sophomore defensive back Ryan Redd recorded his second career interception.

-Sophomore receiver Martin Nance gained over 100 yards receiving for the second straight week, covering 108 yards against the Zips.
