OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University junior place-kicker Andy Brumbergs was named one of 30 preliminary candidates for the 2001 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced today.
Brumbergs, the RedHawks' primary place-kicker for the last two years, led the team in scoring (66 points) and ranked in the top five in the Mid-American Conference in field goals made (12) and scoring by kickers last season. In Miami's season-opening 33-30 come-from-behind victory over Vanderbilt, Brumbergs booted field goals of 47 and 25 yards and converted three PATs. In his career, he has converted 21-of-30 field goals (.700), including a career-best 49-yard attempt last year at Ohio State.
Brumbergs and the rest of the RedHawks open camp this Thursday, August 9 in preparation for the season opener at the University of Michigan on Sept. 1. Miami makes its home debut three weeks later vs. the University of Cincinnati and last year's Groza Award winner Jonathan Ruffin.
