YPSILANTI, Mich. - On a cold, windy Saturday afternoon in Ypsilanti, Mich., Miami's men's cross country team claimed second place at the 2001 Mid-American Conference Men's Cross Country Championship. Miami has finished either first or second in the MAC six straight years.
Junior Brian Godsey (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and sophomore Steve Padgett (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) earned all-MAC accolades, Godsey as a member of the first team, Padgett as a second-teamer. Godsey was in second with about 200 meters to go, but faltered slightly in the final stretch and finished fifth in 25:17.0. Padgett lost some ground in the final quarter-mile as well and came in 11th with a time of 25.30.6.
It is the third time in as many years Godsey has been an all-MAC performer in cross country, as he was named to the first team last year and the second team two years ago. Padgett made all-conference for the second year in a row, after achieving first-team all-Big Ten laurels last year while at Michigan State.
The muddy course was conducive to more compact runners, and junior Adam Cross (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and senior Nate McClintock (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) took full advantage of it, running their best-ever races. Cross placed 20th in 25:59.1, McClintock 25th in 26:01.2. Sandwiched between them in 22nd was junior Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton [Tenn.]), who crossed the finish line in 25:59.3.
Two men appearing in their first MAC meet were freshman David Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South), who finished 29th in 26:09.3, and junior transfer Tim Hufford (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), who came in 35th with a 26:19.3 clocking. Sophomore Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), a second-team all-MAC selection last year, found the going a little tougher this time around as he placed 44th, completing the course in 26:32.1. Rounding out the RedHawk runners was senior Nick Andrews (Kettering, Ohio/Alter), who took 54th in a time of 26:49.2.
The outcome of the meet was as expected, with Eastern Michigan winning the title, followed by Miami, Central Michigan and Kent State. The individual winner was none too surprising either as Eastern Michigan's Boaz Cheboiywo beat his closest competitor, Central Michigan's Jake Flynn, by more than a minute in a MAC-record time of 24:11.
The RedHawks have two weeks to prapare for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship, to be held Nov. 10 in Terre Haute, Ind.
