Miami Volleyball Team Downs Marshall in Five Games

Miami improves to 9-14 overall and 5-7 in league play. Marshall falls to 3-22 overall and 1-11 in MAC action.
Amy Pfohl paced the RedHawks with a career-high 19 kills. She also notched nine digs and one service ace. Kelly McCullough added 17 kills, eight digs and four blocks, while Erika Eagan posted 10 kills, 12 digs and two service aces. Mindy Clark tallied 11 kills, 11 digs and two service aces.
For Marshall Tracey King posted 18 kills, 14 digs and three blocks. Jodi Fick added 17 kills, 22 digs and two service aces.
In the first game, Miami battled back from a 2-6 deficit to inch out a 15-12 win. Clark and McCullough each nailed kills to pull Miami to within two. Marshall's Nicole Michal recorded a kill to give the Thundering Herd a 7-4 advantage. Miami, however, answered back with six unanswered points, highlighted by an Pfohl service ace and a Clark kill, giving Miami the 10-7 lead. With game point on the line, Miami owned a 14-10 advantage. Marshall notched two straight points to cut the lead to two. A kill by Eagan gave Miami back the serve and the RedHawks benefited from a Marshall attack error to claim the first game.
Sparked by four service aces, Miami opened up an 11-1 lead. A kill by Marshall's Fick and a Miami attack error cut the RedHawk lead by two. Kills by Jennifer Eaton and Clark and a service ace by Summer Clouse place Miami at game point with a 14-3 advantage. Clark iced the game minutes later on a kill as the RedHawks took a 2-0 lead in the game, 15-3.
Marshall regrouped in the third game, capturing a 15-13 decision. It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the game. Eaton delivered a devastating kill for the RedHawks to knot take the 7-6 lead. With the game knotted, 8-8, a kill by Marshall's Andrea Kastein sparked a five-point run. A service ace by Nora Keithley and three Miami attack errors gave the Thundering Herd a 13-8 advantage. Capped by a kill by Pfhol, Miami evened the game, 13-13. However, a block by Kate Shultz and Michal placed at game point. Shultz posted a kill to give Marshall the 15-13 win in game three.
The Thundering Herd sent the match into rally scoring, winning the fourth game, 15-10. Neither team held more than a three-point advantage until Marshall took a 14-10 lead on a Miami attack error. Fick notched the previous point for the Thundering Herd on a service ace and a kill by Sara Boyles iced the game for Marshall.
Although Miami led a two-game lead slip away, the RedHawks did not falter in rally scoring, posting a 15-8 win in the third game to take the match. Miami owned a 9-4 advantage until the Thundering Herd began to creep back in to the game closing the gap to 9-7. Clouse faked out the Marshall defense, dumping the ball over the net thwart the Herd rally and give Miami a little more cusion. Eaton served a crucial ace to extend the Miami lead and McCullough drilled a kill to hand the RedHawks the 15-8 win.
