From 1948-52, Powell earned six varsity letters (three apiece in cross country and track) and two freshman numerals. During his varsity career, he won five MAC titles with victories in cross country and track's one-mile run in 1951 and '52 and a lone triumph in the two-mile run in 1952. His performance in the 1951 mile-run event set school and conference records.
He also collected Ohio College championships in the mile-run in 1951 and '52 and set a meet record in the two-mile run in 1952. In 1951, he garnered second-team All-America honors with a 10th place finish in the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
