Dr. James Garland
President of Miami University
"It's a great pleasure for me to introduce our new A.D. and his wife to the community. When Joel Maturi accepted the A.D. position at Minnesota, we immediately convened a search committee headed by Vice President of Business and Financial Services Richard Norman. We knew when we began that we'd have many strong candidates because our past two athletic directors, Joel Maturi and Eric Hyman, have left a financially secure athletic department with high morale. What we didn't realize was just how attractive this position would be. The pool of applicants was the strongest I've seen in my 33 years in education. When the dust of the search process settled, it was clear that Brad Bates was the best individual to continue leading the Miami Athletic Department forward. He's an up and coming star in the sports management profession."

"On behalf of (my wife) Michelle and I, I'd like to say that I'm thrilled and excited to be here and really looking forward to the opportunities ahead. There are few schools remaining that use an athletic curriculum as a way of developing students and can still compete for championships in all sports. Miami University does both with integrity and a sense of its great tradition."
"My highest priority goes back to the students. I want to continue maximizing the development of students through the athletic program. From my discussions with the coaches here, I'm aware that you don't come to Miami without that priority. Accomplishing that goal is going to require both human and financial resources, which is where my position comes in."
"During my second interview, I asked a number of Miami's senior administrators what the best thing was about Miami. They all replied 'the people'. My first objective here is to develop relationships and establish a level of trust with the many people I'll be working with on a regular basis."
