OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University athletic department has added nine personnel to its staff and promoted four others to higher positions as it enters the 2001-02 school year. "In the Miami tradition, I am proud to welcome these nine new staff members into the RedHawk family," said Miami Athletic Director Joel Maturi. "We have a great group of people here and this summer's new hires and promotions will do nothing less than improve an already strong athletic department."
The following is a list of the new personnel, their personal information and the position they will hold this academic year.
Marianne Bullis * Assistant Softball Coach: Bullis, a 1998 graduate of the University of Utah, comes to Miami after serving as the assistant softball coach at Indiana State University for the past year. Prior to her stint with the Sycamores, Bullis was the assistant softball coach at Navarro College and a volunteer coach at Colorado State University.
With the RedHawks, Bullis will work directly with head coach Angie Jacobs in all facets of the softball program.
Ben Carignan * Academic Coordinator: Benjamin Carignan has been named an academic coordinator in the Learning Assistance Department. Prior to his hiring, he was a graduate assistant and intern in Miami's Physical Education, Health, and Sports Studies (PHS) Department. As an intern, Carignan worked with Miami's women's soccer, field hockey and synchornized skating teams in various areas of sport psychology. He also was an assistant women's soccer coach at Western Washington University, his alma mater, from 1997-1999.
He recently received his master's in sports studies from Miami. He will continue to be an instructor in the PHS Department and work at the University`s Fitness Center.
James Carsey * Strength & Conditioning Intern: James Carsey has been added to the strength and conditioning staff as an intern. He comes to Miami from Ashland University, his alma mater, where he was a graduate assistant for football as well as an assistant weight room coordinator and strength coach. His duties at Ashland included creating weight-training and running programs and instructing the men's basketball, wrestling and women's volleyball teams.
Prior to arriving at Ashland, he worked as the weight room coordinator, defensive coordinator and assistant wrestling coach at North Union High School in Richwood, Ohio. Carsey is also working on getting his master's of education in sports science from Ashland.
Todd Foley * Assistant Men's Swimming Coach: Todd Foley, a 1997 graduate of Miami University, has been brought on as an assistant men's swim coach. Foley was a coach at two swimming clubs in Washington, KING Acquatic and Elmbrook, where he developed workouts and taught fundamental technique. During that time, he also worked as an instructor for USS Swimming in Wisconsin.
Foley also will teach part-time in the PHS Department.
David Haskin * Marketing & Promotions Intern: David Haskin, a 2001 graduate of St. Olaf College, has joined the Marketing and Promotions Department as an intern. Last year he was involved in all aspects of recruiting as assistant football recruiting coordinator at St. Olaf, including interviewing prospective student-athletes and assembling a highlight video. As director of athletic marketing from the fall of 1999 until his graduation, Haskin established the first student-based athletic marketing program at St. Olaf.
Phil Kraus * Assistant Women's Swimming and Diving Coach: Phil Kraus has been named an assistant women's swimming and diving coach. Kraus spent the last two years at Northern Illinois University in a similar role with the men's team. Before that, he served as head swimming and diving coach at Lebanon (Ind.) High School from 1995-1999.
Kraus graduated from Ball State University in 1997 with a degree in secondary education.
Alyssa Lewis * Assistant Synchronized Skating Coach: After serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the Red and White synchronized skating program, Lewis signs on as the full-time coach responsible for the collegiate team. She has been involved with the Miami skating program since 1997 when she was a graduate student in the Department of PHS and was the assistant skating coordinator in Goggin Ice Arena. Lewis completed her undergraduate work at Tulane University and received her master's degree in Sports Studies from Miami in 1999.
Kevin Morley * Assistant Athletic Trainer: Morley comes to Miami from the University of Florida where he has spent the past two years working towards his master's degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences. Morley has worked on the Medical Staff at ESPN's X-Games and as a clinical director at the Athletic Training/Sports Medicine Center at Florida. A 1999 graduate of James Madison University, Morley received a bachelor's degree in Health Sciences.
At Miami, Morley will work primarily with the ice hockey, synchronized skating and baseball teams.
Steve Neil * Assistant Event Manager (Promotion): Neil has been promoted to the position of assistant event manager after spending the past year as the game day operations intern. He receives his promotion just months after earning his M.S. in Sports Studies from Miami in May, 2001. Neil is a 1999 graduate of Miami and was a relief pitcher for the RedHawk baseball team.
Angie Renninger * Associate Director of Athletic Media Relations (Promotion): A four-year veteran of the Miami media relations office, Renninger earns a promotion to Associate Director of Athletic Media Relations. Entering her fifth year at Miami, Renninger will be the primary media contact for the volleyball, men's basketball, and men's golf & women's tennis teams. She is a 1997 graduate of Westminster College in Pennsylvania.
Mary Romanello * Assistant Athletic Trainer/Instructor for PHS: After graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 1981, Romanello earned her master's degree in physical therapy from Indiana Central University in 1984. She most recently was working as a physical therapist at Tri-Health Physical Therapy-Evendale in Cincinnati and before that was a casual faculty member in the PHS Department at Miami. Since 1998, Romanello has been working on her PhD. at Miami, focusing on a Special Degree Program in Educational Administration.
Returning to the Miami staff, Romanello will work as an Instructor for the PHS Department and as an assistant athletic trainer.
Grant Wall * Assistant Men's Cross Country and Track & Field Coach (Promotion): Grant Wall has been promoted to a full-time assistant coach of the men's cross country and track & field team. He was the team's volunteer assistant the last three years. A 1998 graduate of Ohio State University, Wall earned his master's degree in sports organization from Miami in 1999.
Wall will continue to work with athletes in the distance, jump, USATF Level II throws and multi events.
Brad Wands * Director of Marketing (Promotion): Wands earns his promotion to Director of Marketing after spending one year as Miami's Assistant Director of Marketing & Promotions. He will become responsible for all facets of the Miami marketing division. Wands is a 1998 graduate of Emory University and received his masters degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 2000.
