OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University alumnus Brian Godsey (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) is returning to George L. Rider Track Tuesday, June 15 to make official attempts at the world records for the backward 800-meter run and backward mile. After accomplishing the feat in practice, Godsey has decided to make an official attempt Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Godsey ran both cross country and track for the RedHawks from 1999 to 2004. He completed his cross country eligibility last fall, leading Miami to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Along the way, he earned all-MAC first-team and all-region honors. In December, Godsey graduated from Miami with a degree in mathematics.
According to Backward-Running-Backward.com, Italy's Stefano Morselli is the current record holder in the backwards 800m, completing the distance in 2:57.39 on Nov. 25, 1995, in Castelnovo Monti, Italy. In the backwards mile, D. Joseph James (India) lays claim to the mark, having crossed the linein 6:02.35 on Aug. 10, 2002, in Coimbatore, India.
For admittance into the Book of Alternative Records, a feat must have at least two witnesses.
