OXFORD, Ohio - Two-time all-American, senior Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), leads a group of four athletes from Miami University's men's and women's track & field team in the 2004 NCAA Championships, June 9-12, in Austin, Texas. Joining Kremer is freshman long jumper Lashonda Davis (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo), as well as junior high jumper Erik Reynolds (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and freshman hammer thrower Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga./The Lovett School) from the men's side.
Kremer is competing in the 3,000m steeplechase at her third NCAA Championships, garnering all-American honors in her previous two trips. Her personal-record time of 10:10.51 came in finishing ninth at the NCAA's last season. This year, Kremer qualified for the national meet with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Regional. The preliminaries of the steeplechase are set for Wednesday at 10:10 p.m., with the top 14 advancing to the finals on Friday at 8:45 p.m.
Miami's school-record holder in the long jump, both indoors and outdoors, Davis is the only RedHawk to get an at-large berth. She finish ninth at the regional, but advanced on the strength of her record jump of 20-7 1/2. Davis was the third at-large jumper admitted, and is ranked 19th nationally. The long jump is scheduled for its preliminary round on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The top 12 move on to day two, Thursday at 6:30 p.m., where another round of jumps narrows the field down to nine for the finals.
At the regional meet, Reynolds cleared 6-11 to establish a new personal record and finish in a tie for fourth. The MAC Champion in the event, he had cleared the regional-qualifying mark of 6-10 3/4 three times on the season, before PRing at the regionals. Reynolds is the last 'Hawk to compete, as his preliminary round gets underway at 8 p.m. on Thursday, with the finals on Saturday, also at 8 p.m.
Another freshman school-record holder, Dunkleberger set a school standard in the hammer throw after flirting with it much of the season. His toss of 210-5 put him third at the NCAA Regionals, earning him an automatic bid to the national meet, while also meeting an Olympic 'B' standard. Dunkleberger is attempting to break his school mark when the preliminaries get underway on Thursday at 6 p.m. The finals are slated for Saturday at 5 p.m.
