CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference has announced its top institutional awards for overall athletic achievement as Miami University captured its second consecutive men's all-sport championship and its fourth in the last eight years, besting Kent State University. On the women's side, Miami combined to finish fourth behind Kent State, Central Michigan and Western Michigan, respectively.
Miami wrapped up the Reese Trophy, named for the MAC's first-ever commissioner David E. Reese, for the second straight year and for the 22nd time since its inception in 1958, more than doubling its closest competitor, Ohio University, which has nine. The RedHawks completed the year as league champions in football, second in baseball and swimming and diving, third in cross country and basketball, fourth in outdoor track and field and eighth in golf. Miami has now finished in the top four in the Reese standing in each of the last 10 years, including nine top three finishes.
Points are awarded in the all-sport series based on each school's finish in each sport, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school. An institution may count either indoor track and field or outdoor track and field but not both.
The Jacoby Trophy is an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner Fred Jacoby, who helped incorporate women's athletics into the league. Miami's women's program scored a total of 73.5 points for an average of 8.17, picking up MAC championships in basketball and swimming and diving, second in outdoor track and field and fourth in softball and fifth in cross country. Miami has captured just two Jacoby Cups in the award's 20 years, winning the inaugural cup in 1983 and again in 1997.
