CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference announced the final standings for its all-sports trophies, the Reese and Jacoby, at the annual MAC banquet on Wednesday. The RedHawks finished near the top in both competitions, taking second in the Jacoby rankings for its female sports, while finishing third in the Reese standings for its male sports.
"I am very proud of the continued improvement throughout all of our teams," said Director of Athletics David Sayler. "This is our best combined finish in the Reese and Jacoby since 2005 when we won the Reese and placed fourth in the Jacoby. We look forward to even bigger things as we Graduate Champions in 2018-19."
For both trophies, points are awarded based on each school's finish in a particular sport, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school. The women's trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby. Jacoby was the MAC Commissioner from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women's athletics into the conference structure. The men's trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese. Reese was the first-ever MAC Commissioner and served the conference from its inception in 1946 until 1964.
For the RedHawk women, this is their best finish since winning the Jacoby Trophy in 2013. They were led by the volleyball and field hockey teams, each of which won the MAC regular season (along with tournament) championship. Tennis finished second, while cross country took third at the MAC meet. The Miami women's basketball team had its best showing since 2012-13, placing fourth in the regular season.
For the RedHawk men, it is their best finish since they also finished third in 2011. They were led by the baseball and cross country teams, each of which finished second. For cross country it was their second straight runner-up finish. For baseball it was their best record since placing second overall in 2011. The men were also helped by the golf team, which placed third in the MAC Championship in 2018.
