CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference today announced its top institutional awards for overall athletic achievement as Central Michigan University (men's) and Ball State University (women's) were honored for the 2000-01 season. Central Michigan won the Reese Award for the first time while Ball State earned its third Jacoby Trophy and second in a row.
Miami University, two-time winner of the Jacoby Trophy in 1983 and 1997, finished sixth in the women's standings with 51.5 points. The swimming team registered quality points for the Red and White by finishing second while the soccer and tennis squads finished third.
On the men's side, the RedHawks wound up third behind CMU and Ball State with a total of 59 points, two shy of first place. Miami has won a league-best 20 Reese Trophies, with its last coming in 1999. Both the swimming and cross country teams tallied second-place points for Miami during the 2000-01 academic year.
The Reese Trophy, an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner David E. Reese, is awarded to a MAC University with the six-highest finishes in the 11 men's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. The top six sports per university are to be counted, however, three of the six must be football, basketball, and baseball. Schools may count only one track and field score, indoor or outdoor, but not both.
The Jacoby Trophy, an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner Fred Jacoby, is awarded to a MAC University with the six-highest finishes in the 12 women's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. The top-six sports per university are to be counted, however, three of the six must be basketball, volleyball, and softball.
