Traverse City, Mich.-The Mid-American Conference today announced its top institutional awards for overall athletic achievement as Miami University captured its first men's all-sport championship since 1999 and its third in the last seven years, besting Kent State University by one point. On the women's side, Miami combined to finish with 62 points, one point behind second-place Kent State (63) and four behind first-place Ball State (66).
"Finishing in the top three in both standings and capturing a MAC-record 21st Reese Trophy is a tribute to all of the hard work that happens on the field and behind the scenes here at Miami," Miami Director of Athletics Brad Bates said. "It symbolizes our high standards, lofty expectations and primary objectives. From our students and coaches to our faculty, staff and administration, we all strive for championships while earning prestigious Miami University degrees."
The Reese Trophy is an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner David E. Reese and is awarded to the MAC university with the six-highest finishes in the 11 men's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. The top six sports per university are to be counted; however, three of the six must be football, basketball, and baseball. Schools may count only one track and field score, indoor or outdoor, but not both.
Despite not winning an individual sport title, the Miami men won the Reese Trophy, garnering second-place finishes in golf and baseball, a third-place ranking in basketball and cross country, a fourth-place finish in swimming and sixth place mark in football. It is Miami's MAC-record 21st Reese Trophy, 12 more than second-place Ohio University's nine.
The Jacoby Trophy is an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner Fred Jacoby and is awarded to the MAC university with the six-highest finishes in the 12 women's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. The top-six sports per university are to be counted; however, three of the six must be basketball, volleyball, and softball.
The women's program scored 62 points, picking up MAC championships in soccer and swimming and finishing second in outdoor track and field, third in women's basketball, tying for fifth in softball and ninth in volleyball. Miami has captured just two Jacoby Cups in the award's 19 years, winning the inaugural cup in 1983 and again in 1997.
