OXFORD, Ohio -- In addition to the triumphs on the playing fields, Miami University's student-athletes concluded a strong spring semester in the classroom. RedHawk athletic teams boast 113 student-athletes earning academic honors from the University. Fourteen student-athletes recorded 4.0 grade-point averages to earn President's List plaudits, while an additional 99 student-athletes garnered Dean's List accolades with a 3.5 GPA or better.
Representing the volleyball team were Tara Buroker (Bluffton/HS), Jennifer Eaton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Susan Poll (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood), who notched perfect 4.0s. The volleyball team and women's track and field and cross country teams led all squads in number of individual President's List honorees.
Kim Dobler (Rocky River, Ohio/HS) and Suzanne Smith (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) from women's track and field and cross country were named to the President's List, while Becca Vianello (Mariemont, Ohio/HS), who competes for both the women's track and field and swimming programs, also earned the honor. Buroker and Dobler were the only two student-athletes to achieve a 4.0 GPA both semesters for the 2000-01 academic year.
Volleyball led all squads in team grade point average for the second-consecutive semester, posting a 3.32. Women's swimming and diving (3.31), softball (3.26), synchronized skating (3.26), women's track and field and cross country (3.26), women's soccer (3.22), women's tennis (3.11) and women's basketball (3.05) rounded out the top eight team GPAs. Golf led the men's teams with a 2.91 GPA.
"I am always proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes, but am particularly pleased with the academic successes they have had during the spring semester, especially at such a highly reputable institution as Miami," said Miami Athletic Director Joel Maturi. "We increased the number of student-athletes on the President's and Dean's Lists, had more teams above a 3.0 and increased the number of student-athletes attaining a 3.0 GPA or better. Those are great accomplishments by our student-athletes, and I hope they will carry these successes over to the fall semester."
Of Miami's 500-plus student-athletes competing in 19 sports, 53 percent attained a 3.0 GPA or better.
