OXFORD, Ohio - For their performances last week, sophomore Christopher Torpy and senior Maria Scavuzzo are Miami Athletes of the Week for the week of May 7-13.
Torpy had a big performance in his second MAC Outdoor Championships. The sophomore won the 1500m racked up 26 points for the RedHawks across three events, winning a MAC title and finishing runner-up twice. The title came in the 1500m, where he edged out his twin brother Sean with a time of 3:51.55. He followed that up with a runner-up performance to Sean in the 800m (1:52.14) while also taking runner-up in the steeplechase (personal-best 9:02.38). Torpy projects to qualify for the NCAA East Region Preliminary in both the 1500m (31st) and steeplechase (45th).
This the second time this season and in his career that Torpy has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of April 16-22.
Competing in her final MAC Outdoor Championships, Scavuzzo had a meet to remember. She opened the weekend by winning her first individual MAC title when she shattered her own school record and the MAC meet record with a 10,000m time of 33:35.72, nearly 35 seconds ahead of the runner-up. That time bumped her up to eighth in the NCAA East Region. Saturday saw her lead the 5000m for a large chunk of the race before ultimately placing fifth with a near-PR of 16:16.26 as she sits 29th in the region in that event. Her performance for the weekend earned her the MAC Outstanding Track Performer award on the women's side.
This is the third time this season and fourth time in her career that Scavuzzo has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of March 26-April 1.
These were the final Athlete of the Week awards for the season. They will resume in the fall.
