OXFORD, Ohio - For their performances last week, sophomore Christopher Torpy and senior Nelli Ponomareva are Miami Athletes of the Week for the week of April 16-22.
One week removed from posting a PR sub-3:50 in the 1500m to become second in the Mid-American Conference behind brother Sean, Chris Torpy ran a 3:44.26 to usurp his twin as the new conference leader. Torpy uses his time in the 1500m to continue closing in on the accomplishment of a sub-4 mile.
This the first time this season in his career that Torpy has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week.
Ponomareva went 4-0 this past week, helping the RedHawks to a pair of Mid-American Conference wins and the No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament next weekend. She won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and claimed a 6-1 doubles victory over Western Michigan. Two days later she won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and 7-5 in doubles over Toledo.
This is the fourth time this season and fifth time in her career that Ponomareva has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced on Monday, April 30.
