OXFORD, Ohio - On the weekend of May 14-15, Miami University will honor one of its living legends as it hosts the Bo Schembechler Reunion Roast in Oxford, Ohio. The weekend includes several events culminating with the roast on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
Guest roasters for the event include Miami Director of Athletics and a former player of Schembechler's at Michigan Brad Bates, former Miami coaches and players Ernie Kellermann, Jon Falk, Paul Schudel and Tom Reed, Miami Head Football Coach Terry Hoeppner and Michigan Head Coach Lloyd Carr.
A 1951 graduate of Miami, Schembechler earned two letters as an offensive tackle in football and two as a pitcher in baseball from 1949-50.
He served as an assistant football coach at Presbyterian College, Bowling Green, Northwestern and Ohio State prior to returning to Miami in 1963 as head football coach. In his six years at Miami he compiled a record of 40-17-3 and guided the then-Redskins to co-championships in the Mid-American Conference in 1965 and 1966. He was voted MAC Coach of the Year in 1965.
He became the head football coach at the University of Michigan in 1969 and compiled a 21-year record of 194-48-5. His teams won or shared 13 Big 10 titles and appeared in 17 post-season bowl games. In his first year at Michigan he was selected the national coach of the year" by both the America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Football Writers of America Association (FWAA).
From 1988-90 Schembechler served in the dual role of football coach and athletic director at Michigan. A past president of the AFCA, he was inducted into Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972.
Schembechler retired form coaching after 1989 football season where at the time he had the fifth most victories in NCAA Division I history with a record of 234 wins, 65 defeats and eight ties for a winning percentage of .775 and is currently ranked in 18th place.
