Miami University's athletic department has announced today six individuals will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame as its Class of 2003-04. Among those receiving the honor are Russ Giganti '56, a four-year letterwinning guard on the 1952-55 football teams; Dave Hasbach '74, a standout pitcher for the baseball team who posted a 20-3 record over three years; Julie Howell '93, the fifth-leading scorer in women's basketball history; Bobby Marshall '94, a 1993 all-American as a defenseman on Miami's first CCHA Championship team; Kent McCormick '81, one of the top linebackers in Miami history and the 1980 MAC Defensive Player of the Year; and Sandy Secoy '82, a standout volleyball player who helped Miami to its first two Mid-American Conference titles in 1981 and 1982.
With the addition of the six, Miami's Hall of Fame has now grown to 180 members. This year's class, the 35th edition, is to be inducted at halftime of the Miami-Toledo basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. A Hall of Fame brunch will be held at the Shriver Center on the campus of Miami University, preceding the game at 10 a.m. Tickets for the brunch can be ordered through the Miami Athletic Ticket Office at (513) 529-HAWK or 1-877-MU-HAWKS.
Russ Giganti '56 - Football ... four-year letterwinner (1952-55) ... Miami won MAC championships in 1954 and 1955 with perfect records of 4-0 and 5-0 after finishing second in his first two seasons ... played for Miami legendary coach Ara Parseghian ... helped Miami to a 32-3-2 record over his four-year career ... first-team all-MAC guard as a senior ... member of the 1952 squad that set a modern day Miami record, averaging 311.2 rushing yards per game ... the 1955 team averaged 5.8 yards per carry, also a school record.
Dave Hasbach '74 - Baseball ... three-year letterwinner (1971-73) for Miami, compiling a 20-3 record as a pitcher ... missed his senior season due to an elbow injury ... ranks fifth in school history with a career ERA of 2.15 ... is one of just three pitchers in Miami history with 100 or more strikeouts in a season, posting 100 in 1972 ... also ranks third in career strikeouts with 249 ... was drafted in the first round of the 1974 supplemental draft by the Kansas City Royals ... spent six years in the Royals organization, making it as high as the Royals' AAA affiliate, the Omaha Royals.
Julie Howell '93 - Women's basketball ... four-year letterwinner (1988-92) as a post player ... part of Miami's MAC championship team in 1989-90, helping the squad post a 23-5 overall record ... second-team all-MAC selection in 1991 ... first Miami player selected to MAC all-freshman team ... held Miami's record for career free-throw percentage (.835) until it was narrowly broken in 2001 ... tallied career-best 410 points during her senior season ... career field goal percentage ranks fifth all-time at Miami ... 66 career blocked shots rank sixth all-time at Miami.
Bobby Marshall '94 - Ice hockey ... four-year letter winner as a defenseman (1991-94) ... helped lead Miami to its first CCHA title in 1992-93 with a record of 27-9-5 and earned second-team all-Central Collegiate Hockey Association honors ... he and teammate Brian Savage were the first ice hockey all-Americans at Miami, earning second-team honors in 1993 ... is the school's second-leading scorer among defensemen and 22nd overall with 115 points ... 1993-94 team captain ... was named team Co-Rookie of the Year in 1990-91 along with current head coach Enrico Blasi ... named 1992-93 CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman.
Kent McCormick '81 - Football ... lettered four years as a linebacker (1977-80) ... was a member of Miami's 1977 MAC championship team that went 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference ... earned MAC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team all-MAC honors in 1980 ... led Miami in tackles and was team defensive MVP in 1979 and 1980 ... named team captain for the 1980 season ... earned the football team's John Baumes Award in 1977 as the squad's top freshman.
Sandy Secoy '82 - Volleyball (1978-81) ... helped Miami to back-to-back MAC titles and postseason tournament appearances in 1980 and 1981, the first championships in the program's history ... her team's compiled 132 wins and a .727 winning percentage during her career ... named team captain as a junior and senior ... was the first Miami volleyball player to earn first-team all-MAC honors in 1980 ... returned in 1983 as an assistant coach.
