- Individual athlete counseling:
- Provide appropriate nutrition interventions for: improving eating habits, altering body composition, weight management, ensuring adequate calorie intake, developing meal plans/eating patterns, adjusting to college dining/eating, developing pre/post training nutrition recommendations, developing a “game day” nutrition plan, injury recovery, assessing hydration habits, disordered eating/eating disorders, medical nutrition therapy, management of food allergies/intolerances, management of gastrointestinal distress, assessing vitamin/mineral deficiencies, etc.
- Team Talks/Presentations:
- Nutrition 101, sports nutrition basics, eating like an athlete on campus, where/what to eat on campus & on the road, pre/during/post nutrition fueling, hydration, supplements, effects of alcohol, grocery shopping, etc.
- Recipe demonstrations.
- Educational Grocery Store Tours:
- Take a group of 4-5 athletes to Kroger to teach athletes how to shop for optimal health and performance.
- Focus on specific needs: quick breakfasts, grab-and-go lunches, packable snacks, dorm room snack staples, meal prep/quick meals on a budget, how to read nutrition label/pick best option, etc.
- Away Competition Menu Planning:
- Create a list of best choice options at restaurants and/or list of best restaurants in a specific city.
- Provide coaches/staff with a list of appropriate snacks for travel and pre-competition.
- Created Competition Fueling Guidelines Packet for coaches and staff.
- Hydration Protocol:
- Develop hydration protocol for team or specific athlete.
- Game Day Planning/Protocol:
- Pre-Game meals, Halftime or between heat/race snacks, Post-Game meals (home and away).
- Provide Teams with Specific Sports Nutrition Handouts:
- For use in locker rooms, distribution to athletes, or education for coaches.
- Collaborate with Sports Medicine Staff:
- Ensure best treatment/protocol for safety and health of student athletes.
