Sport Psychology services offer confidential mental health counseling and mental skills training to Miami University's ICA student-athletes. Prevention, intervention, and other support services are provided to help student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence and mental wellness, both in and out of sport.
 
Our Mission:
To help student-athletes develop and maintain healthy personal, emotional, and psychological functioning so they can achieve their athletic and academic goals.
 
Services:
  • Preperformance wellness evaluations as part of annual physical examination process
  • Initial consultation appointments
  • Short-term individual counseling and mental skills training
  • Emergency/Crisis services
  • Consultation with students, coaches, and athletic staff
  • Group support/counseling
  • Team interventions and mental skills training
  • Performance and psychoeducational workshops
  • Outreach programming
  • Referral services
  • Couples counseling (if both individuals are eligible for services)
 
Frequent Concerns:
Example concerns that student-athletes commonly present with include, but are not limited to:
  • Personal concerns: Stress, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts/self-harm, decreased athletic performance, anger, grief, disordered eating.
  • Relationship concerns: Romantic/intimate relationship difficulties, sexual concerns, roommate/teammate problems, conflict with coaches, family of origin concerns.
  • Cultural concerns: Impact of oppression, power, privilege, identity, intersectionality.
  • Developmental concerns: Identity development, adjustment to college/collegiate athletics, life transitions including athletic retirement.
  • Academic concerns: Performance anxiety, perfectionism, underachievement, low motivation.
  • Other concerns: Traumatic events, athletic injury/recovery, sexual assault, abuse, family history, spirituality, body image, food preoccupation, substance use concerns, healthy lifestyle choices.
 
How to make an appointment:
  • Talk with your athletic trainer about scheduling an appointment
  • Call the Student Counseling Center at 513-529-4634
  • For urgent 24/7 crisis intervention/stabilization for yourself or another Miami student you are concerned about contact the HOPE Line at 855.249.5649
  • If you feel unable to keep yourself or others safe call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately

Staffing:
JAELYN BEAN
MENTAL PERFORMANCE COACH

Jaelyn Bean, a Miami alum, was a student-athlete at the Miami Middletown branch and now serves as its head women's basketball coach. She was a Mental Health Tech (2022-2025) at Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. Bean also coaches basketball with the Dayton Lady Hoopstars (2020-present) and previously helped with the women's basketball teams at Chaminade-Julienne High School (2020-21). As a student, she served as a Graduate Assistant with the Miami University Graduate School, interned as a Mental Performance Coach at Miami University Regionals (2022-23), worked as a Research Assistant at Miami Middletown (2020) and spent time with RedLine Athletics Youth Sports Performance Center (2019). She graduated from Miami Middletown with a Bachelor's in Psychological Science in 2020. She then earned a Master of Science in Sport Leadership and Management and a Graduate Certificate in Sport Psychology in 2023 from Miami's main campus in Oxford. Her experience as a collegiate athlete and her mental performance knowledge will help student-athletes achieve their best.

Jaelyn Bean
DR. JORDAN GOFFENA
MENTAL SKILLS PERFORMANCE COACH

A former member of the Miami track and field team, Goffena was named the 2012 Darrell Hedric Award Recipient. That same season he established a new school record in the Heptathlon and at the time of his graduation he ranked third in school history in the Decathlon and 110-meter hurdles. He was also a two-time Academic All-MAC performer and a team captain in 2012. He returns to Oxford to work directly with student-athletes as their Mental Skills Performance Coach. His primary role will be to provide student-athletes with educational services geared toward mental preparation and mental performance.

KATHERINE TYLINSKI
SPORT PSYCHOLOGIST


Tylinski will focus on providing one on one consultations and team/group sessions to assist with stress management, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, sports performance anxiety and other mental/behavioral health conditions. Before moving to Oxford, she spent time at Illinois State (Student Counseling Services, 2018-19), Aurora University (Counseling Services, 2017-18), City College of Chicago (Wilber Wright College Wellness Center, 2016-17), Winfield Woods Healthcare Center (Clerk, 2015-16) and served as a volunteer for the Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio (SARNCO) in 2014-15. Tylinski earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies – Security and Intelligence in 2013 from Ohio State. She was also a member of the Buckeyes rowing team from 2009-13, helping to win a Big Ten Championship in 2011 and 2013 and capturing a National Championship her senior year.
