Miami Falls to UC, 5-2

HAMILTON, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Miami University women's tennis team fell in its home opener against the University of Cincinnati, 5-2, at Riverside Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon.
The match opened with a moment of silence to honor the passing of Miami junior and women's tennis player, Erin Rodriguez, who passed away recently.
The RedHawks started off strong in the doubles competition. Sophomore Anzhelika Shapovalova and junior Hannah Shteyn kicked things off with a win over Caroline Morton and Anna Philp of UC, 6-3. The Bearcats came back with a (6-4) win at no. 1 where Lauren Bellinger and Kelly Poggensee-Wei defeated juniors Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina.
The RedHawks clinched the doubles point thanks to senior Andreea Badileanu and sophomore Emily Struble's win over UC's Harley Hutchison and Antonella Bramato, 6-3.
In singles action, Shteyn fell in her match against Cincinnati's Poggensee-Wei (6-0, 6-2). Vasiukhina dropped her match against UC's Hutchinson (6-0, 6-4) to tie it up 2-2.
Badileanu scored another point for the Red & White with her win over Caroline Morton to tie it up in a battle of a match. The senior RedHawk took the first set, 7-6, after winning the tiebreaker (8-6). Badileanu returned to finish strong, 7-5, tallying another point for Miami.
It was a close match between Struble and UC's Anna Philp in the no. 4 flight. Miami dropped the first, 6-1, but then rallied to readily take the second set, 6-1. Struble ultimately fell, 6-4,in the final set despite a strong showing.
Ponomareva dropped her match to Bramato, (4-6, 6-2, 6-0). The matched wrapped up with a struggle at the no. 1 position between Shapovalova and UC's Bellinger. Shapovalova dropped the first set, 6-3, but then came back strong to secure the second set, 4-6. Unfortunately, Miami could not carry over and dropped the third set 6-1.
Next week, the RedHawks are on the road to face off against Indiana University on Sat. Feb. 4, in Bloomington Ind.
