Ponomareva and Vasiukhina Earn Second Consecutive MAC Honor

OXFORD, Ohio ââ'¬" The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday evening that the sophomore pair of Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina was named the MAC Doubles Team of the Week for the weekend of April 1-3.
This is the second consecutive week that the tandem has received this honor and the third time this season, with a previous recognition on Jan. 27. For Ponomareva, this is her fifth Doubles Team of the Week honor, following two awards last season with partner Christine Guerrazzi.
The pair extended their winning momentum with two victories last weekend against No. 1 pairs from Ball State and Toledo. On Friday, their 6-2 win over Toni Ormond and Julia Sbircea helped tie the doubles competition at one apiece, leading to the RedHawks grabbing the opening point. The duo's success continued with a 7-5 victory over Toledo's Sidnay Huck and Emily Mazzola that clinched the doubles point for Miami. Ponomareva and Vasiukhina have now won four consecutive matches.
The pair and their Miami teammates return home this weekend with matches against Buffalo on April 8 at 1 p.m. and Akron on April 10 at 10 a.m. Both matches are scheduled to be held at the Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts, but will move to the Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton, Ohio in the case of inclement weather.
