OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week sophomore golfer Patrick Flavin and tennis sophomore Nelli Ponomareva are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of April 4-10.
Flavin won his third individual title of the season and second in a row at the Hoosier Collegiate on Sunday. He shot rounds of 72-68 to finish at four-under par for the event. It is his fifth top-15 performance of the season and fourth in a row. Flavin helped lead the RedHawks to a tie for the tournament title at the event, their first team title of the season.
This is the fourth time this season and fifth time in his career that Flavin has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of March 21-27.
Ponomareva went 4-0 last week to help the RedHawk women's tennis team to a pair of 5-2 wins against Buffalo and Akron. She moved to 4-0 in MAC action in singles and 2-0 in doubles play. Ponomareva teamed up with Emily Struble for a 6-2 win against the Bulls at No. 3 doubles and then came back with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. Against Akron, Ponomareva and Struble notched a 6-3 win in the third flight. She then hammered out a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles to clinch the match for the RedHawks.
This is the second time this season and in her career that Ponomareva has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Feb. 8-14.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, April 18.
