RedHawks Open Up Play at Louisville Classic

The invitational kicked off with doubles competition with two pairs of RedHawks tallying wins. Juniors Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina defeated Anki Wind and Hann Sohn of Memphis in a tight (7-5) match. Senior Andreea Badileanu and sophomore Anzhelika Shapovalova topped Memphis' Gabrielle Paul and Josephine Cao (6-2). The duo of juniors Hannah Shteyn and Erin Rodriguez dropped a match to Memphis' Marta Morga and Katherine Cao, (6-3).
The Red and White also took on teams from Virginia Tech in doubles. Badileanu and Shapovalova dropped a decision to VT's Nandakuma and Ghanem, (6-2). Ponomareva and Vasukhina were defeated by Butler and Uscocovich, (6-4). Shteyn and Struble came back to win against Virginia Tech's Baron and Collins, (7-5).
Miami faced off in singles competition against Virginia Tech and had a solid showing with wins across the board. Shapovalova continued her impressive tournament season after she defeated Nandakumar in straight sets (6-3, 6-1). Shteyn also defeated Sarah Baron in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) while Badileanu topped Nancy Ghanem (6-2, 6-3).
Ponomareva won her match against Katherine Butler. The junior RedHawk dropped the first set (6-2), but then rallied past her opponent to win in the next set (7-6) after battling it out in a tie breaker (7-5). Struble topped McKenzie Collins (6-4, 6-4). Rodriguez had a solid performance to round out the day in her match against Emily Pence. The Florida native started off strong, winning the first set (6-1). She dropped the second set (4-6), but then powered through to take the final set (6-1).
The RedHawks return tomorrow for day two of the Louisville Classic with doubles in the morning and singles to follow in the afternoon.
