Miami Succeeds in Day Two at ITA Regionals

Day two of the ITA Regional Championships saw another round of solid performances from the Red & White. In singles action, senior Anzhelika Shapovalova and junior Nelli Ponomareva advanced to the next round of their respective flights. Shapovalova beat Elle Stokes from Louisville after a back and forth match. Shapovalova dropped the first set (4-6), but then rallied to win the next two sets (6-2, 6-3). Ponomareva bested Burrows from Middle Tennessee State University in a close match. The junior RedHawk took the first set (6-1) and fell in the second (3-6). Ponomareva came back to beat her opponent in a tie breaker (7-6, 8-6) and move forward in her draw.
Senior Andreea Badileanu lost to Vanderbilt's Rosca in a battle of a match. The Bucharest-native took the first set (7-5), but then fell in the last two sets (4-6, 3-6). Junior Hannah Shteyn dropped a decision against Vanderbilt's Kurtz (6-4, 6-4).
In doubles play, Badileanu and Shapovalova dropped a match to Boesing and Stokes from Louisville (8-5).
IU Regionals
A portion of the RedHawks opened up play at the Indiana Regionals. Junior Erin Rodriguez dropped a decision against Barbare Eristavi (Western Michigan) (6-4, 6-1). Sophomore Emily Struble fell to Ashley Bongart (Tennessee), (6-4, 6-4). Marta Ruedas-Burgos (Purdue) bested junior RedHawk Anastasiia Vasiukhina in a two-set match (6-3, 6-0).
Struble and Vasiukhina also competed in a doubles match were the dropped a decision to Sabe and Suarez of Purdue (8-3). The pair moved to the next round in the consolation bracket where they beat Riley and Silva (Tennessee) (8-6). The Red and White is set to compete in their respective consolation finals tomorrow.
