Miami Completes First Day of ITA Regional Championships

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Day one of the ITA Regional Championships saw a strong start from the Miami University Women's tennis team. Two RedHawks advanced to the main draw in singles after battling it out in the qualifying rounds.
Senior RedHawk Andreea Badileanu made the main draw after taking on Rachel Reichenback from Xavier. Badileanu took the match in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). Shapovalova also faced Alina Schibol of Murry State who she beat in straight sets (6-0, 6-3). Sophomore Anzhelika Shapovalova dropped her first set against her opponent Marta Peris from Middle Tennessee State (4-6). The sophomore RedHawk rallied past her opponent to win in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). Badileanu also topped Asel Jumamukhambelova from UT Martin, (6-1, 6-2). Shapovalova and Badileanu have also secured spots in the doubles competition.
In doubles action, juniors Hannah Shteyn and Nelli Ponomareva took on Boesing and Stokes of the University of Louisville. The Cardinals bested the RedHawks, (8-4). Shteyn and Ponomareva will be joining their teammates in the singles draw.
The ITA Regionals continue tomorrow in Murfreesboro, Tenn. with RedHawks competing in their respective flights. A portion of the team will be opening up play at the Indiana University Regionals in Bloomington, Ind.
