Tennis Finishes Exhibition Season Strong Against Marshall

PITTSBURGH, Pa. ââ'¬" In its final exhibition event of the season, Miami University's women's tennis team finished strong, taking four matches from Marshall University Sunday morning at the Nishan Vartabedian Spring Invitational at the University of Pittsburgh's Alpha Tennis Center.
In the doubles competition, the RedHawks picked up their first victory of the weekend as the sophomore pair of Nelli Ponomareva and Nastia Vasyukhina defeated Rachael Morales and Maddie Silver in a 7-6 decision.
Miami's most successful round of the tournament came in the singles portion as it grabbed three from the Thundering Herd. Freshman Emily Struble finished her exhibition season with a team-leading 11th victory, beating Marija Bogicevic, 6-2, 6-3. Ponomareva was victorious for the second time this weekend, dropping Anne Gulsrud in a 6-1, 6-1 result. Finally, sophomore Hannah Shteyn beat Maddie Silver in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
The two teams will face off later in the regular season when Marshall travels to Hamilton on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m.
The RedHawks will now turn their attention toward the regular season and an opening match at Indiana. Miami will take on the Hoosiers on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. in Bloomington, Ind.
The team's home opener will be against Xavier on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. at the Riverside Athletic Club.
