OXFORD, Ohio - Twelve local high school bands will bring more than 750 young musicians to Miami University on September 24 for the home season opener between Coach Don Treadwell's RedHawks and the Bowling Green Falcons.
Among the local high school bands already planning to attend are Edgewood High School (Jon Arnold, director), Fairlawn High School (Jessica Moore, director), Miami East High School (Jeff Smith, director), Loveland High School (Sean Thompson, director), National Trail High School (Julie Toschlog, director), Eaton High School (Tracy Phillips, director), McClain High School (Russ Hawvermale, director), Batavia High School (Dave Smith, director), Amelia High School (Michael Calland, director), New Miami High School, Hamilton High School and Mt. Notre Dame High School.
Fans who have attended a Band Day football event in the past at Miami University know that there are few occasions more inclusively entertaining than the electricity created by the combination of great football and an ensemble of couple of thousand musicians.
"Band Day during Family Weekend will provide a unique opportunity to highlight the spirit of Miami Pride to the families of Miami students and fans while simultaneously enjoying the talent of high school band performances within the fabric of the Miami game day festivities," said Anthony Azama, MU's athletic marketing director. "What a great experience September 24 will be for visitors to Oxford!"
Four hours prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff, the bands arrive at Yager for rehearsal, with the sounds emanating throughout the streets of Oxford. Later that morning, the high school bands will be sprinkled throughout the parking lots surrounding Yager Stadium, entertaining the thousands of tailgaters.
At halftime, says Director Stephen Lytle, the local bands will surround the Miami Marching Band on the field for a special presentation of the famous 1812 Overture.
"We are excited to once again host High School Band Day and celebrate Miami football with our special guests," said Lytle. "This year's production of the renowned 1812 Overture promises to be powerful. Bands can expect to have a fun day filled with a rehearsal, the special halftime performance, sitting in the stands with Miami's Marching Band, cheering on the RedHawks, and other opportunities for bands to perform on their own."
