RedHawks Open Season at Coastal Carolina

ON TAP: The Miami University women's basketball team opens the season Monday, Nov. 3 at Coastal Carolina. Opening tip is slated for 6 p.m. in the first of two MAC versus Sun Belt Challenge contests this season.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Amber Tretter has recorded 20 double-doubles in her career, including 10 last season. Throughout her career she has averaged 10.8 points and 8.5 rebounds and has 508 rebounds through her first two seasons with Miami. She is currently on pace to become just the second RedHawk in program history to record 1,000 career rebounds.
STRONG NUCLEUS: Miami returns four players (Amber Tretter, Núria Jurjo, Ilse de Vries and Tamar Singer) from last season's 19-12 campaign. In all, they return 35.7% (735/2060) of the team's scoring, 65.2% (496/761) in rebounding and 43.3% (177/409) of the assists entering 2025-26.
ABOUT COASTAL CAROLINA: Coastal Carolina went 23-9 a year ago, played in the semi-finals of the Sun-Belt Conference Tournament and added a WNIT appearance. The Chants lost their top two scorers to the transfer portal, but still return Kristin Williams, who averaged 10.8 points and 2.2 rebounds last season.
FAMILIAR FACE: A new addition to the Coastal Carolina team is Hennessey Luu-Brown. Luu-Brown played in 35 games for the RedHawks over the past two years where she averaged 5.3 points and 1.9 rebounds per contest.
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
2024-25 HIGHLIGHTS:
• Last season Miami averaged 66.5 points per game, up 12.6 points/game from the 2023-24 season.
• Miami had the top scoring defense in the MAC, allowing 59.1 points/game
• The 19-win season last year was Miami's best since the 2017-18 RedHawks won 21 contests.
• Miami's 10-win improvement from the previous year was the second-best single season turnaround in program history.
NEW FACES, NEW PLACES: Miami has eight new players this season, which includes five transfers, two freshmen and a red-shirt freshman. Joining the RedHawks via the portal include Amber Scalia (St. Thomas), Clara Gonzalez Planella (Jacksonville State), Macie Taylor (Wright State), Ashton Elley (UAB), and Brooke Blumenfeld (NIU). Coach Box also added two freshmen (Mio Sakano and Anna Hurst) and Emily VanTimmeren, who technically joined the RedHawks last December, has yet to see action with the Red and White.
SINGING HER PRAISES: Tamar Singer played 29.2 minutes a contest last season, running the point as a true freshman. She ranked seventh in the MAC in assists (4.2), 10th in assist/turnover ratio (1.1) and fifth in steals (2.2). She scored in double-figures seven times last year and posted at least five assists 15 different times.
DE VRIES PLAYS OVERSEAS: This summer, sophomore Ilse de Vries represented the Netherlands as a member of the U20 National Team at the annual FIBA U20 EuroBasket League. In seven games, she averaged 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. In her first year with the Red and White she averaged 4.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest. She also finished second on the team with 28 blocks.
WINNING WITH DEFENSE: Last season Miami led the MAC in scoring defense, allowing 59.1 points per game (60th nationally), which was the second-best defensive effort in program history (The 1977-78 Miami team allowed 56.9 ppg.) The RedHawks were 13-4 on the year when they force their opponent into 20-plus turnovers and led the conference with 11.5 steals per game in 2024-25.
THAT 70'S SHOW: It's not all about defense when it comes to Miami. The RedHawks were a perfect 11-0 last year when they scored 70-plus points in a contest.
CHANDLER RETURNS: Head Coach Glenn Box may have a new assistant coach this year, but she is not new to the program. Maya Chandler, who played for the RedHawks last season, is in her first year as an assistant coach. Last season, Chandler averaged 11.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest.
REDHAWKS PICKED SEVENTH IN PRESEASON POLL: Miami was picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll, voted on by the league's 13 head coaches.
