OXFORD, Ohio - With one month left before the start of the new season, the Miami hockey team has named junior defenseman Louie Belpedio as its 2016-17 team captain. He was presented with his No. 58 jersey with the 'C' stitched on by past captains of the Red and White.
A native of Skokie, Ill., Belpedio served as an alternate captain for the RedHawks during the 2015-16 campaign. He led all Miami defensemen with 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists) and received All-National Collegiate Hockey Conference Honorable Mention. The 2015-16 season also saw Belpedio wear an `A' for Team USA at the World Junior Championship, which he helped lead to a bronze medal.
As a freshman, Belpedio made an instant impact on the Miami blue line with 19 points (6g, 13a) and a +15 rating while logging all 40 games. For his efforts, he was placed on the NCHC All-Rookie Team and was tabbed a finalist for the NCHC Rookie of the Year award. His play in the postseason helped the Red and White capture the 2015 NCHC Frozen Faceoff crown along with a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Belpedio has totaled 36 points (10g, 26a) in 74 games at Miami. He has also been diligent in the classroom, landing on the NCHC All-Academic Team in 2015-16.
The RedHawks' first competition of the 2016-17 season comes in the form of an Oct. 1 exhibition against Waterloo at Steve `Coach' Cady Arena. The regular season officially gets underway on Oct. 7, when Miami heads to Providence for a weekend series. Single game tickets go on sale Sept. 6-8.
