MU Offense Explodes in 17-6 Win Over EMU

OXFORD, Ohio – Seven RedHawks notched a multi-hit game in Saturday’s 17-6 win over Eastern Michigan at McKie Field at Hayden Park. In addition, the Red & White scored in seven of their eight at-bats, as well as scoring two or more runs in five of those innings.
Miami got the scoring started in their first at-bat. Ryan Elble led off the game by taking a hit by pitch and then Jake Romano doubled down the right field line. That was followed by a Matt Honchel two-run single through the right side. The RedHawks tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second on a Spencer Dull single to left field, a Scott Slappey triple to left center and a Jacob Wolf single to right center.
EMU got their first run in the top of the third when Tony Dileo scored on an error.
The Red & White extended their lead in the bottom of the third when a Steve Sada single up the middle scored Honchel. The RedHawks got on the scoreboard for the fourth inning in a row in the bottom of the fourth on a Jake Romano one-run single and a sac fly by Matt Honchel. Through four innings of play, the ‘Hawks were in control with an 8-1 lead.
The RedHawks pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Sada one-run single and a Dull sac fly. EMU cut into the Miami lead in the top of the seventh on an Austin Wilson one-run single and a Jordan Peterson two-run single. Miami responded in the bottom half of the seventh by putting up six runs in the inning. A two-run home run by Elble and a grand slam by Slappey made the Miami lead 16-4 through seven innings. The homer by Elble ties him for the team lead with five, and Slappey’s grand slam is his second of the year.
EMU put up two more runs in the top of the eighth on RBI single by David Lett and Peterson. Miami plated one more run in the bottom of the eighth on an Adam Yacek RBI single.
Miami starter Jacob Banks (3-7) got the win, going six and a third innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Brad Schwartz and Ryan Haynes were the only RedHawk relievers. Schwartz tossed one and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Haynes closed things out in the ninth, allowing one hit. EMU starter Ryan Lavoie (2-5) tossed just one inning before getting pulled. He allowed five earned runs on six hits.
With two triples today, Jake Romano ties the Miami record for most in a single game. The last RedHawk to record two triples in a game was Max Andresen in March of 2014. In addition, Miami 17 runs scored is the most since 2013 when the RedHawks put up 19 against Eastern Kentucky on the way to a 19-2 victory over the Colonels.
The RedHawks return to action Sunday as they take on Eastern Michigan for the series finale in the hopes of earning their third conference series win of the season. Ryan Powers is set to take the mound and first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
