OXFORD, Ohio - As Miami University football's fall practices draw closer, there's lots of news to share with RedHawk fans. The players report on Thursday (Aug. 2), with the first on-field practice scheduled for Friday afternoon. Here are some notes of interest:
COACHES SWAP ASSIGNMENTS: Coach DON TREADWELL has announced that second-year assistant coach MARK SPENCER and first-year staffer ROBERT LEE have switched coaching assignments. Spencer will now mentor the RedHawk wide receivers while Lee will oversee the running backs.
GRADUATE ASSISTANTS AND INTERNS SET FOR 2012: Treadwell's graduate assistants this season will include one returnee, ELI WICKLUND, who will assist RON CARPENTER with the defensive backs. MATT MOUNTJOY, the team's video coordinator in 2011, will become a grad assistant under ROBERT LEE with the running backs. MAURICE "MO" WATTS, who received his bachelor's degree from Miami last spring, will assist ED STULTS with the offensive linemen. MIKE HIESTAND, a 2012 graduate from Illinois State, will help MATT EDWARDS with the linebackers. Serving for a second season as an offensive intern is former Michigan State star receiver HERB HAYGOOD. He will assist JOHN KLACIK with the RedHawk tight ends. On the defensive side of the ball, ELIJAH FERGUSON will help NICK SIATRAS with the defensive line. MICHAEL LaFLAMME will assist Siatras with recruiting.
PIGSKIN PREVIEW LUNCH DEADLINE APPROACHES: Miami football fans can watch scrimmage, then meet players and coaches afterwards on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Pigskin Preview and Cookout. The scrimmage begins at 11 a.m. An autograph session begins at 1:30 p.m. Wrapping up the day will be an old-fashioned cookout under the east stands at Yager Stadium. Fans are reminded that no walk-ups will be permitted to the lunch, so make your reservation by Wednesday, Aug. 8, by calling (513) 529-0264.
APPAREL & EQUIPMENT SALE: Miami's athletic equipment department will have an apparel and equipment sale on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the west side of Yager Stadium. Among the items available are RedHawk home football jerseys (red), some game-used helmets, baseball and softball jerseys, polos, T-shirts and shorts. Locker room chairs and stools also will be on sale. Sales terms are cash or checks only-no credit cards.
TUNING UP FOR BAND DAY: Nearly a dozen high school bands have confirmed their attendance at Sept. 8's Miami Band Day festivities. The RedHawks will host Southern Illinois in Miami's home season opener. The list includes Miami East, Amelia, Hillsboro, White Hall, National Trail, North College Hill, Loveland, Batavia, Eaton, Batesville and Monroe, along with several individual members from Butler County bands and twirlers. They'll salute music from the popular "Blues Brothers" movie at halftime in a mass-band performance.
