Miami vs. Lake Superior State
Friday, Feb. 5, 2010
Cady Arena - Oxford, Ohio
Despite leading 1-0, the RedHawks were outshot 17-10 in the opening period, the first time they had been outshot in a period since Jan. 24 when Alaska fired 12 shots to Miami's five in the third period. It was the first time it had happened in the first frame since the first night against the Nanooks (Jan. 23), when Alaska held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The 17 shots allowed were the most Miami has conceded in a period since Oct. 17, 2009 at New Hampshire when UNH tallied 19 shots in the second stanza and the most the 'Hawks have allowed in any period in league play this season.
Junior forward Carter Camper tallied Miami's first goal, giving him 11 on the year (just four in CCHA play) and extending his point streak to six straight games. He has also tallied a point in 10 of his last 12 games now and has 29 points on the year, second on the team. Camper's goal turned out to be the game-winning goal, giving him two on the year, with his other coming in the season opener (Oct. 9) vs. St. Cloud State.
Junior forward Tommy Wingels registered the assist on Camper's goal, giving him a helper in each of his last six contests and 10 of his last 11. He now has 17 assists in 2009-10, second on the team, and 30 points overall, which leads the RedHawks.
During the first intermission, Miami great and current San Jose Shark Dan Boyle (1994-98) was recognized for being inducted into Miami's Hall of Fame in 2007, as he was unable to attend the induction ceremony then. He was also honored for being selected to the 2010 Canadian Olympic Hockey Team, as he will compete in Vancouver for a gold medal this month.
Junior forward Andy Miele added an empty-net goal with two-tenths of a second remaining in the game, giving the RedHawks their first empty-net tally since senior forward Jarod Palmer registered one Dec. 12, 2009 vs. Ohio State. It was just Miami's second empty-netter of the year.
Sophomore goalie Cody Reichard recorded a career-high 33 saves Friday, topping his previous best mark of 29 saves on Oct. 24, 2008 at Notre Dame. He also recorded his fifth shutout of the year, which sets a new school single-season record, breaking David Burleigh's mark of four in 2002-03. It was Miami's eighth shutout of the season, which adds to its school record (the previous record for the team was four in a season). In 21 CCHA games, the RedHawks have allowed just 23 goals and lead the nation in goals allowed per game (in all games).
With the win, Miami extended its unbeaten streak in CCHA play to 19 games, as the RedHawks are now 15-0-4 since a 3-2 overtime loss to Michigan State on Oct. 24. Miami has also now won four straight games (all in CCHA play) and six of its last seven contests.
Miami's 2010 senior class (Jarod Palmer, Gary Steffes, Dane Hetland and Brandon Smith) moved into sole possession of second place on the school's list of all-time winningest classes, as they have now won 99 games in their career, trailing last year's class by just seven victories.
Lake Superior outshot Miami, 33-32, Friday night, marking just the fourth time in 29 games this season Miami did not out-shoot its opponent (shots were even in one game). In those four games however, the RedHawks are now 3-0-1. The 33 shots allowed also tied an opponent season high, which Miami has allowed two other times this year (Nov. 14 and Jan. 16 both vs. Ferris State).
Miami was successful on all four penalty kills Friday against the Lakers, giving them eight straight successful kills. The RedHawks have successfully killed 104 of their last 112 penalties.
The RedHawks are now 13-0-3 when scoring first and 16-0-0 when leading after two periods.
