OXFORD, Ohio - One goal and a career high three assists by senior midfielder Elizabeth Gilroy helped Miami cruise to an 8-2 win over Missouri State Saturday in Mid-American Conference action. The RedHawks improve to 11-5 overall, and 5-2 in the MAC. The Bears are 6-9, and 1-4 in the MAC.
Miami had eight penalty corners during the game and was successful on three of them. Gilroy assisted on two of them, passing one to Christine Brightwell and the other to her sister Katie.
"I was really pleased with the effort from the team, as well as the outcome," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We really battled during the game and grew into it. We became more and more aggressive as the game evolved."
The RedHawks took a 3-1 lead into halftime off the penalty corner from Christine Brightwell, as well as a goal from Amanda Seeley at the 15:49 mark and Gilroy's goal off a rebound of a shot at the 28:38 mark. Miami outshot Missouri State 11-3 during the half.
The second half continued to be more of the same as Miami kept play in its offensive half of the field. After the Bears had scored to pull within one at 3-2, Katie Brightwell scored off a pass from Danielle Gaynor at the 42:05 mark. Two goals within a minute of each other by Christine Brightwell and Kate Snyder helped put the game away. The RedHawks finished the scoring late with goals by Katie Brightwell and Kylie Landeros. The goal for Landeros was the first of her career.
"Kelsey Dean played well in goal. She was very verbal and helped set our defense," said Reeve.
Miami outshot Missouri State 25-7 for the game. Katie Brightwell led the team with six shots, while Christine Brightwell had five.
The RedHawks hit the road next weekend for two games when they travel to Kent State on Saturday, October 26 for a 2 p.m. game, and then face Ohio on Sunday, October 26 at 1 p.m.
